Entry qualification

Undergraduate diploma (or higher) For Specialization “Teacher Mentor”, (50 CP/75 ECTS, 2.3 semesters for full-time studies): pedagogical education – bachelor’s degree or second level professional higher education with a mastered program in the amount of at least 160 CP/240ECTS. The entry qualification documents are accepted in any languages (issued in or officially translated along with verified copies) You must take the original entry qualification documents along with you when you finally go to the university. Often you can get a suitable transcript from your school. If this is not the case, you will need official translations along with verified copies of the original. Applicants must upload education documents in original language, as well as translations into English. Diplomas and transcripts issued outside EU must be legalized with a legalization stamp or Apostille. You must take the original entry qualification documents along with you when you finally go to the university.

Language requirements

English Applicants must prove their English language knowledge. University accepts the following international language tests: TOEFL IBT – at least score 72 TOEFL Essential – at least 8 points IELTS – at least score 5.5 PTE General – at least level B2 PTE Academic – at least 51 points FCE – at least level B CPE – Proficiency/C2 Proficiency: any level CAE – C1 Advanced: any level If your previous studies have been obtained in English but in the country where English is not native language, then you have to present an official letter from your previous educational institution (secondary school, etc.) where is stated that all your studies were in English (medium of instruction is English), and you have to pass interview where the University of Latvia will evaluate your language skills.

Other requirements

Entrance examinations will consist of two parts: 1. Written part. Essay on current issues and problems in education in the chosen specialization (300-500 words); 2. Oral part Interviews during which the applicant’s communication, leadership, and foreign language skills are tested. Criteria for the essay: a) content of the essay (concrete, convincing, creative, understandable); b) opinion (clear, consistent); c) essay layout (logical, coherent, fit for purpose, focused on conclusions), style, and vocabulary. Criteria for discussions: (a) ability to communicate using appropriate terminology when answering questions; b) ability to briefly state the main idea and answer questions in English; c) the ability to describe one’s leadership skills by consciously reflecting on one’s previous experience. The average grade in study courses must be 60% of the maximum. As a part of the admission process applicants will be asked to participate in an online interview.

Overview

The aims of the master’s study program “Educational Sciences”: to promote the improvement of students’ professional-pedagogical, management and research competence for competitiveness in education, to motivate for further academic growth.
Tasks of the study program:
1. to promote students’ research skills by integrating the latest scientific findings and innovative ideas into research activities;
2. to promote the development of students’ pedagogical competence, readiness to plan, implement, evaluate and develop educational activities in accordance with the learning needs of educational target groups, various abilities, and prior knowledge, internal and external conditions of educational institutions and education system development;
3. to promote the competence of students’ management and leadership by implementing change management;
4. to promote student participation and co-responsibility by promoting the development of a competent, responsible and motivated personality for lifelong learning;
5. to promote students’ understanding of professional and academic ethics standards and their observance in practical activities.

In the specialization direction “Education Management” students’ understanding will develop theoretical and practical knowledge about education management, education policy in the state and local governments, management of organizations, leadership in education, education economics, educational work management will be supplemented.

Career opportunities

The program “Educational Sciences” is an academic program and is oriented towards the preparation of higher-level managers in education and teachers -supervisors, mentors in any sphere of educational, and all the necessary preconditions for a successful career in public and private sector related to education. At the same time, the program prepares students for further doctoral studies. The program has been developed in co-operation with three partner Universities in Latvia that have experience in the implementation of similar academic Master study programs.
