We offer four new program concentrations to specialize your artistic pursuits. You’ll be guided by professors who are accomplished professional artists and who also serve as thoughtful mentors. Plus, you will have full access to well-equipped, spacious studios during your studies and enjoy many opportunities to exhibit your artwork throughout the academic year.
Where Art Can Take You
The art program at Elmira is designed to instill students with vital skills – including critical reasoning, problem-solving, and communication – that will help in any profession. Graduates of our art program have gone on to become teachers, professional artists, illustrators, designers, art handlers, gallery managers, and curators. And many students at Elmira choose to double major in art/business, art/psychology, art/anthropology, art/English, or art/history.
Programme structure
The art major is a flexible program with four concentration options.
Studio courses will expose you to a wide variety of media, materials, and techniques, while art history courses provide an understanding of the historical significance of the visual arts in our lives today. An art minor is a great complement to many majors. Studying art helps build critical-thinking and communication skills, as well as develop new and creative ways to express yourself.
\Are you an Art major interested in helping others? Or are you a Psychology major interested in the therapeutic qualities of art?
Developed in coordination with a licensed art therapist, this 21-credit hour Art Therapy concentration combines art and psychotherapy. You’ll learn about a growing career field that can help people of all ages and situations explore their inner selves and express themselves more thoroughly. This cross-disciplinary program leverages the expertise of our professional Art and Psychology faculty.
In this program you’ll receive an overview of the art therapy field and its purposes, advantages, and various career specializations while taking a combination of art and psychology courses. This combination of courses will prepare you for graduate study, including the creation of a digital portfolio, artist statements, and related professional documents required for graduate-study admission.
\Do you care about design elements like color, font, and symmetry? Interested in creating designs that communicate strong, clear, and accessible messages that attract attention?
The Digital Art and Graphic Design program merges creative thinking with technical skills, giving you the visual communication skills in demand in marketing, advertising, social media, theatrical production, and online publishing careers. Explore how to assess your audience and design for the proper channels to meet your audience wherever they are. This program can be taken either as a concentration or as a minor and easily pairs with other programs to set yourself up for careers in marketing, communications, social media, theatre, and publishing.
Because of the small class sizes at Elmira College, you’ll get individual attention from your professors while learning design techniques and how to use the latest software, including the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of tools. You’ll learn the fundamentals of how to design content that is accessible and attractive to your audience, skills that are in high demand among employers. This versatile program is designed to pair well with our Marketing, Fashion Merchandising, and Fashion Marketing programs.

The Digital Art and Product Design program is for anyone who wants to design beautiful and functional products that delight consumers. You’ll learn about the artistic elements, such as color and form, that go into products and how they align with and define brands.
You’ll learn how to apply design principles to the process of building beautiful, interesting, accessible, and functional products for consumers. You’ll get hands-on experience moving ideas through the 3D modeling process and understand how to think critically about not just the use of the product but also its appeal. Also, this program pairs well with other programs including Marketing; Fashion Merchandising; and Fashion Marketing.
\Do you want to deepen your skills in fine-art mediums such as drawing, ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, or sculpture?
The Studio Art program will give you the fundamentals needed for post-graduate study or professional employment, providing you the flexibility to pair your studies with other disciplines, broadening the range of opportunities you can pursue in and after Elmira College. At EC you’ll learn from accomplished professional artists who will guide and mentor you in the well-equipped, spacious studios on campus. You will also have many opportunities to exhibit your work on campus and in the local community, including our own George Waters Art Gallery.
In the Studio Art program, you’ll be exposed to a wide variety of media, materials, and techniques and be encouraged to find your own creative “voice.” You’ll also get an understanding of the historical and contemporary significance of the visual arts in our lives today. Gallery workers learn about curating and mounting exhibitions. Critical reasoning, problem-solving, and communication are emphasized throughout.
