Overview
Why Choose Biochemistry?
The Biochemistry program fosters an aptitude for curiosity and nurtures your desire to explore the molecular processes of life.
What Biochemistry Will Teach You?
You’ll design experiments to test hypotheses, collect data with state-of-the-art instrumentation, and communicate through oral and written work the results of your experiments. You can engage in faculty research as early as your freshman year and have the opportunity and flexibility to study abroad during Term III.
Where Biochemistry Can Take You?
With a biochemistry major, you’ll be prepared to pursue further graduate study in biochemistry, public health, exercise science, health professions-related education, or begin a professional career. Many of our alumni with a Biochemistry degrees have gone on to pursue medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and pharmaceutical degrees.
Programme structure
Students who have completed the requirements will:
Understand the principles of various fields of chemistry and biology (organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, metabolism, and molecular biology)
Develop as independent thinkers who are responsible for their own learning
Develop transferable quantitative skills
Be able to work with others demonstrating leadership and collaborative skills
Apply modern instrumentation theory and practice to biochemical problems
Recognize potential laboratory safety concerns and address them using appropriate techniques
Produce scientific reports formatted for peer-reviewed publication, using the primary literature
Present the results, conclusions, and relevance of scientific experiments to a specific audience
Career opportunities
