Overview

Would you like to study in an inspiring, resourceful and creative environment? This is exactly what our study programme of “Lower Secondary School English Language Teacher Training” offers. Its aim is to prepare you for the profession of an English language teacher at a lower secondary school. The whole study programme, i.e. subject-matter and propedeutic courses of teaching, is characterised by connecting theory and practice. As part of the study programme you will have an opportunity to do your teaching practice in three different schools. Your experience will be analysed in reflective seminars and other related courses. In the master’s study programme, didactics of English language teaching has become a priority together with the effort to establish links between didactics and linguistic, cultural and literary disciplines. The emphasis is on our students’ ability to apply the acquired knowledge to their teaching practice at lower secondary schools. Having prospective teachers in mind, the teachers at the English department employ such teaching methods which provide a teaching model to our students -prospective teachers. We offer a full-time and a combined mode of the Lower Secondary School English Teacher Training Programme. The Department of the English Language and Literature is well-known for its friendly atmosphere, extraordinary relationships between students and teachers, rich community life and, last but not least, for a number of extracurricular activities. You can join the FAME choir or take part in a popular intensive language and methodology course which employs features of experiential learning. We also support student stays abroad, which can enable them to gain the necessary insight and valuable experience at foreign universities – in Great Britain, USA, Spain, Denmark, Sweden and other countries.

“All the world’s a classroom.”

You might not be sure whether this is the right study programme for you. Are you trying to decide between close types of study programmes? Well, you might be interested to know that we are trying to focus on English from the point of view of teaching. We are a teacher training faculty: to prepare excellent teachers of English is a priority of our department. The study programme is aimed at graduates from bachelor study programmes preferably focusing on teaching of English as a foreign language.

The combined mode of the study programme usually takes place once in two weeks, on Fridays. Common core courses can be scheduled twice or three times in a term, including Saturdays.

Practical training
Teaching practice will help you to acquire professional competences indispensable for teacher’s everyday work. You will learn about the roles the teacher performs while teaching. It will help you to realise your own needs related to the teaching profession. Gradually, you will become responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating your teaching. You will get a clear idea of what teacher’s everyday work represents. Teaching practice consists of 380 hours divided into three terms and is conceived as a structured system of subsequent courses. Reflective seminars will provide you with a unique opportunity to share and reflect on your experience.
