History_of_the_University

Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies is a higher education and science establishment of the Republic of Latvia, where scientific research as well as academic and professional study programmes are carried out.

The main goal of the University is to create intellectual potential for providing sustainable development of Latvia and its countryside in particular while becoming and up-to date, internationally recognized and prestigious university, which actively integrates into the united European space of higher education and science.

The history of the university dates back to 1863 when the Department of Agriculture was established in the Riga Polytechnicum.

In 1919 the University of Latvia opened the Department of Agriculture the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

In 1936 the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia decided to transfer the Agriculture Faculty of the University to Latvia to Jelgava, thus founding a new higher education establishment – the Jelgava Academy of Agriculture. On 23, 1938 Kārlis Ulmanis, the president and prime minister, proclaimed “The Constitution of the Jelgava Academy of Agriculture”.

On July 3, 1939, a new academic institution with two faculties: agriculture and forestry, was opened in Jelgava.

In July 1944, after the Jelgava Palace was burnt down, the Academy ceased to exist. It was renewed in Riga as the Latvia Academy of Agriculture.

On October 19, 1957 the Council of Ministers of the Latvian Soviet Socialistic Republic accepted a decision to transfer the Academy to Jelgava. Till 1964 all the faculties of the Academy were transferred to Jelgava.

In 1991 according to the decision of the Academy’s Council, the Latvia Academy of Agriculture was renamed as the Latvia University of Agriculture.

In 1994 the Senate of the Latvia University of Agriculture approved the symbols of the University: the flag, the emblem, the attire of the administration and academic staff.

In 2001 the higher educational establishment received the state accreditation as a University.

In 2005 the Award of the Year was initiated.

In 2007 the Lifelong Education Centre was established.

In 2010 the distance and e-learning form were introduced.

In 2012 the University approved the official hymn which had been composed in 1940 by Jēkabs Mediņš as a dedication to the Latvia Academy of Agriculture.

Since 2018 6th March LLU Senate approved university name in English "Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies".

We offer comfortable, freshly renovated accommodation for all students in a walking distance to the university, in fact most necessities be it a post office, hospital, quirky café or a nightclub can be reached by foot when you are in Jelgava. However, if it gets too crowded for you, Riga is just a 45min train or bus ride away.

Our mission is to ‘’ develop competitive intellectual capital on the basis of excellence in research, application of research findings, high quality of education and effective management of the university.’’ A community of numerous nationalities and 3 880 students create both a tight knit and diverse academic environment, with graduates who are true citizens of the world.

And have you heard about the Jelgava palace? It is a true baroque pearl, built by Bartolomeo Rastrelli in the 18th century as primary residence for the Dukes of Courland. Currently the palace houses the administration of our university as well as three faculties. You can visit the palace and see wonderful paintings by local artists, immerse yourself in history and see the crypts of noblemen of Courland or simply take a relaxing stroll in the surrounding area.

At LLU you have the possibility to establish connections with real-life practitioners – our students are given lectures and seminars by professionals in various industries, policy makers and experts in their respective fields. You will also not have time to get bored with theoretical studies, as most degree programs feature several field trips and excursions

LLU is had been featuring yearly in the Times Higher Education, which encompasses the best universities in the world. In 2021 commendable results were noted in the social and life sciences disciplines, and our university was ranked in the 1001+ bracket.

LLU also features in the THE Impact ranking 2021, this year being in the 601-800 group among more than a thousand universities in 94 countries. THE Impact ranking assesses the adherence of universities and institutions to the UN sustainable development goals.

Accommodation:

LLU offers a comfortable accommodation possibilities. All university facilities are easy reachable on foot and will take only up to 15 minutes. The rooms are in a very good condition and the furniture is new.

If you are full time student at LLU (have submitted all required application documents), we will arrange the accommodation for you.

It is intended for two persons to share the room, but depending on your needs, living alone is also possible (double price will be adjusted).

At the dormitory you will have:

a bathroom and fridge in each room

kitchen in combination with lounge on each floor
