& In case of HEI change at the request of a student, after the admission letter receiving from HEI, a transfer to another HEI is for an extra cost.

The aim of the programme is to prepare highly qualified specialists in Literary Science with a Doctor’s degree, capable of raising and solving the most important problems of the modern discipline of philology.

The tasks of the programme:

acquisition of the methodology of contemporary literary phenomena analysis (which allows to solve scientific issues connected with the particular historical philological situation);
acquisition of the whole modern science complex on history of concrete national literature or the history of comparative national literature;
fundamental acquisition of the whole modern science complex on the literary and cultural period under study or comparison;
acquisition of the world and European literature, in particular, to such an extent which allows to consider the scientific problems of concrete national literature in wide cultural and literary context;
active participation in scientific life of the DU and the universities of Latvia, as well as systematic participation at scientific conferences abroad, systematic publications in the most significant philological journals, which reflect the findings of the chosen research;
creating of optimal conditions for fulfilling of tasks set for the doctoral students, namely, possibilities to work in the libraries and archives abroad; possibilities to participate at scientific international conferences and at those held in other higher educational establishments; possibilities to have in-service training at some university in the country, the literature of which is being studied;
providing of the conditions to prepare and defend the Doctoral thesis.
As a result of the programme’s acquisition, the young scientist will acquire and be able to demonstrate:


demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the most topical theories and findings of the literary science;
have a command of the research methodology in literary studies and modern research methods;
have understanding of the theoretical concepts of literary studies: poetics analysis of the artistic text, significance of a text in the context of the period.

can independently assess and choose methods corresponding to the literary research;
the research is a topical scientific research providing new understanding of tendencies already known in the literary science;
is able to communicate in both written and oral form on his/her field of literary studies with wider scientific community and society in general;
can independently improve his/her scientific qualification, implement scientific projects by achieving results meeting the international criteria of the discipline of literary science;
is able to supervise scientific research work in the particular field of the literary science.

is able to solve important research tasks by carrying out independent and critical analysis and assessment;
is able to put forward a research idea independently;
is able to plan, structure and manage large scientific projects, including in international context.

Institute has a unique environment, in which Doctoral students of Literary Theory are invited to participate in research and to work out original research in comparative or foreign literary studies.

Doctoral students have possibilities:

to participate in the conferences organized by the Institute of Comparative Studies;
to publish their articles in Institute’s publication “The Almanac of the Institute of Comparative Studies” and other scientific issues;
to participate in the projects implemented at the Institute of Comparative Studies;
to receive scholarship if the student studies for the state budget means.
The Doctoral study programme “Literary Science” is integrated in the activity of the Institute of Comparative Studies. TheInstitute of Comparative Studieswas founded in 2003 with the aim to carry out systematic comparative research in different fields of the humanities in the framework of either one culture or in intercultural context.
