Short Program description

“The aim of the Doctoral study programme in Demography is to train highly qualified specialists to be willing continue research, academic and professional activities in public and private sector. The degree awarded is intended to be fully internationally comparable, allowing graduates to participate in and contribute to international debates and academic community.

These are objectives of the Doctoral study programme in Demography:

• To study theoretical background and methodology of Demography and its disciplines;

• To obtain pedagogical skills and test them in practice ;

• To present research results at international conferences, seminars, workshops;

• To publish research results in peer-reviewed publications;

• To prove competence by writing and defending a dissertation to receive an internationally comparable doctorate in demography;

• To participate in problem-solving related to socio-demographic and economic development of Latvia and the EU.

Expected results

Knowledge: Graduates will be able to demonstrate understanding of the main theories and concepts, research methodology and contemporary research methods in the field of Demography and in related areas of population studies.

Skills: Students and graduates will show that they can evaluate and select appropriate research methods, demonstrate ability to expand the borders of knowledge, create a new understanding of existing knowledge and its application in practice. Students have to be able to present and discuss their research results orally and in written form to international audience of professionals. Students have to improve their qualification independently and in team-work, pursuing research projects and making achievements which are in line with the international criteria. Graduates will be able to handle research and development projects at companies and institutions, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and skills in population studies.

Competences: Graduates will be able to engage in independent and critical analysis, synthesis and evaluation in dealing with important research or innovative tasks. They will be able to come up with their own research proposals, as well as to plan, structure and manage research projects at institutional, regional, national and international levels.

The study programme has compulsory study courses and electives, a choice of which depends on research interests of the doctoral students. Studies are performed in line with each student’s individual study plan and area of specialisation.

The goals of the study programme are in line with the mission of the University of Latvia, focused on research and training of professionals. This programme supports goals and objectives set by the University of Latvia Strategic Development Plan 2010–2020 and Sustainable Development Strategy of Latvia until 2030, approved by the Saeima (Latvian Parliament) in 10 June 2010. The future vision for the programme is being pursued in line with the views of graduates and employers.
