Overview

The sector of modern aviation is global, dynamic and continuously growing. At the same time, it is also one of the most competitive industry in the world. Modern civil aviation deals not only with technical issues of passenger and cargo transportation, but increasingly more attention is paid to the quality of services, timeliness, strategic planning and modern management.

In response to global trends and challenges facing the aviation industry, Kazimieras Simonavicius University offers undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree Aviation Management program that aims to develop highly qualified professionals in the field of modern aviation management who would understand the challenges and laws of the global and competitive aviation sector, and contribute to the aviation industry development.

Aviation management is based on a multi-disciplinary competence framework and includes the following major general and specific areas: strategic management, personnel management, marketing, project management, methods of forecasting and revenue management, finance and economics, operations management, logistics and freight transportation by air, intermodal transportation, aviation industry, organisations of aviation sector and organisation management, aviation business models, environmental protection, air transport policy and regulation, aviation law, aviation politics, air traffic control, operations and management of airlines, planning and management of airports, tourism management, etc.

Aviation Management program seeks the combined result – to prepare specialists in the field of aviation management who would have: 1) analytical, innovative, critical thinking and methodological framework allowing to monitor and evaluate complex aviation business environment; 2) modern general management skills, that are relevant while working in various teams and business organisations, regardless of sector; 3) specific knowledge of the aviation sector, its development, global trends and significance for the countries; 4) the competence that are relevant while working in the aviation sector, taking into account the specifics and features of this sector.

The study program aims to develop aviation management professionals who will understand the importance of the aviation industry and will be able to apply modern management concepts, enabling them to act more quickly in a changing global and competitive aviation sector. The studies will focus on the practical multi-disciplinary skills, enabling to identify the problems and trends, to make managerial decisions independently, to form groups required for their implementation and to organise the necessary activities.

Innovative and student-oriented teaching methods are widely used in the program: classical training methods (e.g., lectures, discussions) are combined with experiential training methods (e.g., teamwork, real case analysis, project development and implementation, interdisciplinary learning), which seek not a formal process implementation but creative and innovative experience and outcome. During the studies, we will seek to ensure the cooperation with the aviation industry companies and organisations, which will provide many opportunities for the students and the graduates since the first year of their studies to learn about the aviation sector and to have professional practice at the best aviation sector companies.

While developing the Aviation Management study program, the University closely cooperated with the Baltic Aviation Academy, which is one of the leading aviation training organisations in Eastern Europe. Aviation Management program students will have the opportunity to study at the Baltic Aviation Academy and to obtain a commercial pilot license after two years of module (theory) training program, which includes a private pilot license PPL (A), the necessary flight experience, instrument flight IR (A) and commercial pilot licence CPL (A) modules and ME (multi- engine aircraft) flight training.

Career opportunities

The aim of the Aviation Management study programme is to prepare professionals that have knowledge and skills to work in a wide range of companies related to the aviation sector, develop management and commercial projects in the field of aviation, and take senior management positions. The competitiveness and global nature of the aviation industry determine the importance of management processes, the need to apply innovative management techniques, to develop and implement new business models and active marketing projects.

The aviation sector is one of the fastest growing business sectors in the world. Worldwide international and domestic revenue passenger kilometers flown grew 5.9% to a new high of 5.2 trillion kilometers in 2011. By 2030, it is forecast that 82 million jobs and $6.9 trillion in economic activity will have air transport at their root (source: IATA – International Air Transport Association. Annual Review 2012). Number of passengers at Vilnius airport in 2012 compared with 2009 increased more than 3 times. Airports in Lithuania (Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga) are among the fastest growing airports in the European Union in 2012. Lithuanian companies in the aviation sector are also growing fast. Two aviation sector companies, “FL TECHNICS” and “Baltic Ground Services”, were among the 10 fastest-growing Lithuanian companies in 2012 (1-3 quarter).

By 2031, it is forecast that more than 1 million pilots and aircraft maintenance specialists will be required as well as that demand of highly skilled, motivated aviation professionals with good skills of information technology, cross-cultural communication, good understanding of the global aviation industry problems and challenges will exceed the supply over the coming years. This indicates that the graduates of the Aviation Management study program will have all opportunities to be employed in Lithuanian and international companies and other organisations operating in the aviation sector.

Students during their studies will be able to get acquainted with the companies that will become their employers in the future, since they will have internships in the companies operating in the aviation sector in Lithuania and other countries. International study experience also will open up the opportunity to find jobs in companies abroad and develop an international career.

Graduates of the Aviation Management study program will be able to continue master’s degree studies in the field of management and other social sciences.
